Since 1843, the farm has been in family ownership and was restored and modernised in 1979 by Theresia and Franz. The prerequisites for such a restoration were subtlety, careful planning and a lot of love. Theresia and Franz rented out private rooms and one apartment from 1981 to 2015.
In 2015, the new Steinernes Meer holiday apartment was built, and our guests obtained their own staircase to the apartments. Since this time, Franz and Carolin Salzmann have lived in the farmhouse here with their children Xaver, Jakob & Luise. Theresia and Franz, who managed the farm for 34 years, now live in the smaller house on the farm. Today, the farm is managed jointly by 2 generations as a family-run business.
The farmhouse
The Sommerergut presents itself as a relaxing holiday farm which has not lost any of the charm of the former farm. The traditional old farm parlour and the beautiful arched entrance area is proof of this, and also the beautiful garden with a magnificent view across our meadows out to the surrounding mountain scenery.
Our farming activities – we have been an organic farm for 24 years!
The Sommerergut has been managed as a certified organic farm for 24 years now. Up until 2001, the barns were located directly next to the farm house. Today, approximately 20 cows and 30 young cattle live in a spacious barn where they can move freely, just 50 m from the farmhouse. The young cattle spend the summer months on the farm’s own alpine farming area and enjoy their freedom in the mountains.
The alpine farming area
In the midst of meadows and wooded areas, our alpine farming area extends from 1400 m to 1700 m above sea level and provides a wonderful view of the lake and the Hohe Tauern (Upper Tauern) region. The mountain hut built in 1734 is located at 1450 m above sea level, and was renovated to a cosy chalet in 1997.
